Suikoden II (幻想水滸伝II Gensō Suikoden Tsū ) is a role - playing video game developed and published byKonami for the Sony PlayStation . The game was released in 1998 in Japan , 1999 in North America , and 2000 in Europe. Suikoden II is set many years after the events in the first Suikoden saga and tells of the invasion of the Highland Kingdom into the city -state of Jowston. The player controls a self-named mute protagonist (named as Riou in the novel adaptation and Drama CD and Tao in the manga adaptation ), an adopted son of Genkaku, a war hero who saved Jowston City State in the war against Highland many years ago. The protagonist and his best friend, Jowy Atriedes then obtain half of the Symbol of Beginning, one of the 27 True Symbols in the Suikoden world and are caught up in the machinations of war with the dark destiny that surrounds the bearer of the Symbol.
